Arrival in Colombo
MORNING
Arrive at Bandaranaike International Airport where your private Drifted Trails guide meets you at arrivals. Transfer to The Galle Face Hotel Heritage Wing in an air-conditioned vehicle. Check in, freshen up, and take your first slow walk along Galle Face Green as the city breathes around you.
AFTERNOON
A curated introduction to Colombo's layers: the Dutch Hospital District for coffee and craft, the old Pettah markets for colour and noise, and a pause at Gangaramaya Temple at golden hour.
EVENING
Dinner at Ministry of Crab in the Old Dutch Hospital — Sri Lanka's most celebrated restaurant, where the lagoon crab arrives whole and the wine list is serious. Early rest in your Heritage Wing room.

Day 2
Colombo to Galle Fort
MORNING
A private morning walking tour of Colombo's most layered neighbourhoods — Cinnamon Gardens, the National Museum and the quiet streets of Slave Island. Return to the hotel for a late breakfast.
AFTERNOON
Private transfer south along the coastal highway. Stop at the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project — a working sanctuary, not a tourist trap. Continue to Galle Fort, arriving in time for the light to turn gold on the ramparts.
EVENING
Check in to Amangalla — one of Asia's great colonial hotels. Dinner at the hotel's Long Veranda, where the ceiling fans move slowly and the food is exceptional. A walk along the Fort walls after dark, when the visitors have gone.

Day 3
Galle Fort & the South Coast
MORNING
A private guided walk of the Fort with a local historian — not the standard route. Into the old Dutch streets, the lighthouse, and the fort's least-visited corners. Breakfast at a favourite local café before the crowds arrive.
AFTERNOON
Drive west to Mirissa for a private boat excursion. Blue whales are resident off the south coast; the boat is selected for its responsible approach and small group. Return to the Fort for a late lunch.
EVENING
Gin tasting at Old Gate Spirits in the Fort's most atmospheric alley. Dinner at a small chef's table restaurant that seats twelve — reserve required, handled by your designer. Return to Amangalla.

Day 4
Into the Wild — Yala
MORNING
Early breakfast at Amangalla before a private transfer east along the coast road through fishing villages and lagoon country. Stop at the Mulkirigala Rock Temple — an ancient cave monastery carved into a single granite outcrop — with almost no other visitors.
AFTERNOON
Continue to the edge of Yala National Park. Afternoon check-in at Wild Coast Tented Lodge, a luxury camp set in the scrub jungle where the park boundary meets the Indian Ocean. A short orientation walk with your naturalist guide.
EVENING
Sundowners on the deck above the lagoon. Private dinner under a canopy of stars, with fires burning low and the sound of something large moving in the trees beyond the camp perimeter.

Yala Wildlife & Departure North
MORNING
Pre-dawn wake-up call. Private jeep into Yala Block One at first light — the leopard density here is the highest in the world. Your specialist wildlife guide reads the ground, the birds, the light. Two to three hours in the park before breakfast back at camp.
AFTERNOON
Depart Yala after a long lunch. Private transfer north through the dry zone — stopping at Kataragama, a pilgrimage town of unusual spiritual intensity, for those who wish to enter the inner temple. Continue toward Dambulla.
EVENING
Arrive at Heritance Kandalama — Geoffrey Bawa's masterpiece, half-swallowed by the jungle, floating above the Kandalama Tank. Check in, walk the long outdoor corridors, and allow the architecture to settle around you. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 6
Sigiriya & Dambulla
MORNING
Depart before 6am for Sigiriya Rock. Climb in the cool of the morning with a specialist cultural guide — there is a route through the gardens that avoids the main crowd flow until the final ascent. The frescoes, the mirror wall, the summit citadel. Down before the heat arrives.
AFTERNOON
Dambulla Cave Temple after lunch — five carved chambers high in the rock, containing the largest collection of Buddhist paintings in Sri Lanka. Arrive at the quiet hour between tour groups.
EVENING
Sunset drinks on the terrace at Heritance Kandalama, looking out over the water and the scrub jungle beyond. Early dinner and rest ahead of tomorrow.

Day 7
Polonnaruwa & the Ancient Cities
MORNING
Cycle Polonnaruwa at dawn — the medieval capital of Sri Lanka, largely intact, almost entirely deserted in the early hours. The Gal Vihara Buddha complex, the Vatadage, the Royal Palace ruins. A specialist archaeologist joins for the morning.
AFTERNOON
Drive north to Anuradhapura — the first great capital, with a sacred Bo tree grown from a cutting of the tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. A quiet, unhurried exploration of a city that was once one of the largest in the ancient world.
EVENING
Return to Heritance Kandalama. A private Ayurvedic consultation and short treatment if desired. Dinner at the hotel's main restaurant.

Transfer to Kandy
MORNING
A final morning at Kandalama — swim in the infinity pool that appears to flow into the jungle canopy below. Late breakfast. Private transfer south toward Kandy, stopping at the Matale Spice Gardens and a small working cinnamon plantation.
AFTERNOON
Arrive Kandy. Check in to The Golden Crown Hotel, a refined boutique property with views over the lake. A first walk around Kandy Lake as the afternoon softens.
EVENING
Attend a private cultural performance — traditional Kandyan drumming and dance, arranged outside the main tourist circuit. Dinner overlooking the lake.

Day 9
Kandy & Into the Hills
MORNING
Private early access to the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic before public hours — your guide knows the chief incumbent monk and has arranged a quiet viewing of the inner sanctum that is normally closed. Return to the hotel for breakfast.
AFTERNOON
Private transfer up into the hill country — the road climbs through rubber and tea, through cloud and cool air. Stop at a small family-run tea factory where the process is explained by the people who do it, not a tour script. Arrive at Heritance Tea Factory.
EVENING
Check in — a converted colonial tea factory at 1,800 metres, its original machinery displayed throughout the building. Dinner in the restaurant built around the old boiler house. The air at this altitude is cold and the silence is profound.

Day 10
Tea Country & Ella
MORNING
Walk the estate rows at dawn with the tea pluckers — a private arrangement, not a crowd experience. The mist burns off by eight. Return for a full English breakfast in the factory dining room.
AFTERNOON
The legendary train journey: board the Podi Menike at Nanu Oya station and ride the most scenic railway in South Asia through tunnels, tea-covered valleys and mountain bridges to Ella. Your designer has reserved the observation car.
EVENING
Arrive Ella. Private transfer to 98 Acres Resort & Spa, set on a working tea estate above the valley. Settle in. The view from your private plunge pool at sunset requires no description.

Ella & the Valley
MORNING
Hike to Little Adam's Peak before the trail fills — your guide takes a quieter path to a better viewpoint. Down by 9am for breakfast at the resort. A long morning of nothing in particular.
AFTERNOON
Nine Arch Bridge at the hour when the train crosses — your guide knows the schedule. A swim at a private waterfall deep in the estate, accessible only through the resort's land. A late afternoon massage at the spa.
EVENING
Private candlelit dinner on the terrace above the valley at 98 Acres — the chef prepares a menu tailored to your preferences. A final Sri Lanka night.

DRIFTED TRAILS TIPS — LUXURY EDITION
What our team wants you to know.
01
The best time for this specific itinerary is between December and March — the south and west coasts are dry, the Cultural Triangle is clear, and the hill country is cool without being wet. We can adapt the sequence for other months; just ask.
02
Every one of these hotels offers treatments and wellness programming. If Ayurvedic consultations, spa days or meditation sessions are important to you, we build dedicated time into the itinerary — these things deserve more than an hour stolen from a transfer day.
03
The train from Nanu Oya to Ella is one of the world's great railway journeys. First class on this line is basic; the real experience is the observation car, which we arrange in advance. Do not attempt this spontaneously.
